Kalila — the Mac app and the browser extension — is made by Stillbyte LLC, Wyoming, USA (“we”).
The short version
Kalila translates on your device. The text you translate, your history and your phrasebook never leave your computer. There is no account, no analytics and no server that receives your data.
What stays on your device
- The text you translate — processed by Apple's on-device translation (the Mac app) or by the translation engine that runs inside your browser (the extension).
- History and phrasebook — kept locally: in the app's folder on your Mac and in your browser's extension storage. When both are installed, the extension and the app exchange the phrasebook directly on your computer (native messaging), not through the internet.
- Settings — your languages and preferences, kept locally.
What Kalila downloads
Language files — translation models and dictionaries, once per language — from our file server, cdn.kalila.app; Apple's languages from Apple, when you choose to download them; and updates of the Mac app from updates.stillbyte.dev. These requests ask for fixed files and carry no information about you or your text. Like any web request they reveal your IP address to the server; we keep no logs that tie downloads to people.
The extension's permissions
- Read and change data on websites — to show the translation bubble, translate pages in place and add subtitles. The page's content is processed on your device and never sent anywhere.
- Native messaging — to talk to Kalila for Mac on the same computer.
- Storage, offscreen document — to keep your settings, history, phrasebook and language files, and to run the translation engine.
- Context menu, text to speech — the “Translate with Kalila” menu item and pronunciation with your system's voices, on your device.
The Mac app's permissions
Accessibility (optional): lets the shortcut read the text you selected in another app, only when you press it.
