Private translator. Your text stays on this page.

Paste anything — a message, a contract, a letter from your doctor. It is translated right here, in your browser, and sent to no one: not to us, not to an AI company, not to anyone.

The first time you use a language, it downloads once (about 40 MB). After that, translation is instant and works offline.

Sent to no one

Your text is translated by your own computer or phone. There is no server that receives it, so there is nothing to log, leak, sell or feed to an AI.

Free, no sign-up, no limits

The work happens on your device, so there is no account, no daily quota and no character limit to pay your way out of.

Offline after the first time

Each language downloads once and stays in your browser. Then translation is instant, with or without the internet, and you can delete it with one click.

Don't take our word for it. Check.

  1. Watch every request. The list here shows every file this page has loaded, live, the newest on top. When you translate, the only new requests are a language's files, the first time — fixed files, the same for everyone. None of them carries your text.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi. Once a language is downloaded, switch off the internet and keep translating. A translator that works offline cannot be sending your text anywhere.
  3. Ask your browser. Its developer tools (F12, or ⌥⌘I on a Mac) → Network show the same list, from the browser itself. The page's security policy lets it connect to kalila.app only.

How a translator can be private.

Most online translators send what you type to their servers, where it is translated — and where it can be kept, read, or used to train AI. This one has no such server.

The translation engine runs inside this browser tab. It is the open-source engine Mozilla built for Firefox's own translation, the same one the Kalila browser extension uses. The page downloads the engine and the language files to you; your text never travels the other way.

    What leaves your device

    • The text you type or paste
    • The translation
    • Your languages, history or anything that identifies you
    • A request for this page and its files
    • A request for a language's files, once per language
    • One anonymous page-view count, without cookies

    Questions

Is this online translator really private?

Yes. Your text is translated by an engine running in your browser, and this page sends it nowhere: its security policy allows it to connect only to kalila.app, and it asks kalila.app only for fixed files — the engine and the language files, the same for everyone. The list of requests on this page shows each one, live. Even the browser's spell check is off in the text box, because some browsers send what you type to an online spell-checking service.

Why does the first translation take a moment?

The first time you translate from or into a language, the page downloads its language file once: about 40 MB for a language and English, about twice that between two other languages (they are translated through English). It is kept in your browser, so every next translation is instant, even offline.

    Which languages can I translate?

58 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Italian, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian — the same languages as the Kalila browser extension.

Is there a limit on how much I can translate?

No. It is free, without an account or a daily quota: the translation runs on your device, so it costs us nothing to let you translate as much as you like.

    Does it keep my text?

No. The text lives only in this tab; close it and it is gone. The page keeps only the language files you downloaded, in your browser, and you can delete them with one click above.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in a current browser on a phone, tablet or computer. A language file takes some space, so on a phone it is best downloaded over Wi-Fi.

Want this on every page you read?

Kalila translates words, whole pages and video subtitles right where you read them — in your browser and in your Mac's menu bar — just as privately as this page. See what Kalila does
